Simple Bars Can Be Original

I feel like the candy industry is obsessed with making super crazy fancy bars. I feel like this is their attempt to make original candy, but they do it by using too many ingredients or by using ingredients that are weird for the sake of being weird. I argue that you can use only a few ingredients, each of which being something you commonly find matched with each other, and still create an original bar. I feel like the people at E.Wedel understand this, particularly with this bar.

Posting A Little Late Today... You Know Halloween

I'm posting a little late today because last night went pretty long. Halloween was as far as I'm concerned a success. The night was spent with friends giving out candy in their front yard. Masks were worn and anyone that felt uncomfortable coming close would get to play a game of target practice. We threw many a candy yesterday and I imagine that my neighbours lawn is littered with bad attempts. I guess we'll find out for sure if a Hershey Bar tree is actually possible.

Candy Crossover Success

I feel like the candy crossover is something that's often tried, but doesn't always succeed. In order for a candy crossover to work it has to do one (or both) of two things. It either has to be well thought out and blend together so well that you don't really know where each treat ends or begins. The other option is to be so weird that you end up with a novelty candy that people may not actually enjoy eating, but they're curious enough to give it a try. This Jelly Belly gum falls squarely into the first, in fact I'm kind of surprised that no one has made Jelly Belly gum before.

Time To Check Off A Few Classics

I've decided that this week I'm going to have a review-a-thon. Normally I post a new review once a week, however during review-a-thons I tend to review more treats in a week. Most of the time the review-a-thons have a theme and this week is no exception. This week I'm going to look at classic flavours of Lay's potato chips that I probably already should have reviewed but haven't. I'm always surprised at some of the classic treats that I've not reviewed yet, and this week's assortment of potato chips is a great example. After all I've tasted more than 30 different flavours of Lay's potato chips already.  I'm starting off with the official classic Lay's flavour, and later in the week I'm going to review BBQ and ketchup flavoured chips as well.

Click here to check out the first very classic variety of Lay's potato chips.

Canadian?!! I never knew.

Every so often I realize that a candy is missing from candycritic.org. These are often candies that I consider to be the classics, but for whatever reason they've failed to be posted on the site. I feel bad about missing out on classic candies because I feel like there are a lot of people interested in reading about their favourites. This week's new review is a classic candy that means so much to me from a nostalgia standpoint, Luck Elephant Popcorn. The thing is, today I learned that this is likely not the case for most of you out there. That's because Luck Elephant Popcorn is apparently a Canadian thing. I'd always assumed it was an American treat that we imported into Canada, however today I learned that just isn't the case.

A Hand Full of Something Missing

One of the things I will never understand about the candy business is flavoured chocolate. Some might even argue that flavoured chocolate is not really chocolate. This argument comes about from the fact that most flavoured chocolates are white chocolate with some kind of flavour added, and many people believer that white chocolate is not chocolate. I'm very divided on the subject of white chocolate being chocolate, but when you add a weird flavour to the chocolate my division pulls a little more towards the idea that it's not. While I don't always understand why companies use flavoured chocolates, I don't always hate them. I just keep wishing that instead of making a chocolate taste like something else, why not use chocolate to accent an amazing flavour.

Click here for an example of why I don't like flavoured chocolate.

It Depends Where You Are

One of the questions I get from people about doing a website where I review candy is, "Won't you run out of candies to review?". There's an assumption that everything we see on our grocery store shelves is all the candies available in the entire world. This week's review reminded me that even when you have the "same candy" it's not always exactly the same. There are plenty of candies to taste, and even those classic candies might not be the same from place to place. So don't worry, I don't see myself running out of candies to review anytime soon.

Candy Themes I Don't Understand

It's not very often that I get a candy that has a complete back story that I don't know at all. It most often happens when it's a candy from a place I've never lived, like this week's review. There's something made by Haribo Germany called Maoam. I don't know what that words means and I don't understand the candy. I still enjoy the candy for the most part, but I never really know what to expect. There are a few western candy campaigns that I don't get, most notably the Twix pick a side campaign. I feel like I'm missing something in this campaign because I just don't get it.

A Cup Full Of Chips

I feel like the trend of sweet and savoury is starting to become completely normal. When I was a kid the idea of mixing sweet and savoury was something totally new. There were only a few salty snacks that you would see in a sweet form, and almost every time you'd see them the salt would be removed. Things like popcorn and peanuts would be in both, but you'd almost never find salty popcorn or salted peanuts with anything sweet. I feel like chocolate covered pretzels and potato chips were the first to cross over. Then, as people got used to it, these treats became less special and more mainstream. Today I feel like there's enough sweet and salty treats out there that I should dedicate and entire section of candycritic.org to this combination of flavours.

Time To Mix It Up

Over the years I've had a love/hate relationship with candy varieties. In the early creation of this site I was always disappointed when a candy company came out with a different version of a classic candy. Today I'm a little more hopeful and excited. I feel like candy companies have become better at creating different versions of their classic treats. I feel like in the past the variations would always be really simple, like slapping a bit of caramel on it, or making it dark instead of milk chocolate. Today these versions are much more sophisticated, and I give a lot of credit to the Kit Kat bar. Specifically the folks at Kit Kat Japan who broke the mold when it comes to changing up a classic.

When Snack Companies Meet

When snack companies work together it seems very polarizing. I feel like these snack combinations either fail miserably or succeed beyond any expectations. I think it all depends on the amount of thought put into these snack combinations. The first step is that the combination has to make sense. The second is that they don't necessarily give what makes them best as an individual snack. Instead these snacks have to give what makes best for the combination. I often find that flavours and textures can clash rather than work together. This is all to say that this is truly a meeting of snacks that truly makes sense, and both contribute the perfect elements to each other.

Birthday Cake, But It's Not My Birthday.

I don't really understand this birthday cake trend. From what I can tell "birthday cake" flavoured treats are often full of sprinkles (technically not a flavour) and have a very strong vanilla flavour. If this is correct, then here's what I don't get. First of all I've never had a birthday cake flavoured birthday cake. I feel like most of my birthday cakes were either chocolate or some kind of ice cream cake. Secondly, isn't this form of birthday cake actually just a vanilla flavoured cake? So if you flavour anything else with this flavour, it's vanilla flavoured and no longer really related to a birthday cake. It just doesn't make that much sense to me and frankly I've never been wowed with anything that's birthday cake flavoured.

I feel like s'mores should be the easiest treat to reproduce in candy form, but frankly I don't know if I've ever found a treat that pulled off the perfect match. I've tried s'mores ice cream, candy bar, and even cookies, but nothing has been able to match the pure bliss that is biting into a warm s'mores fresh off the fire. Not All Kit Kat Bars Are The Same

I think we can all agree that not all Kit Kat bars are the same. After all there's not way that a milk chocolate Kit Kat will taste anything at all like a wasabi flavoured Kit Kat bar. There is however one thing about American Kit Kat bars that's a little strange, and that's the fact that they're made by Hershey's. Everywhere else in the world Kit Kat bars are made by Nestle, but for some reason Hershey makes all the Kit Kat bars in the US. I'm sure there's some kind of guideline that they follow to keep them in line with the Nestle bars, but I will be honest, in general I find American Kit Kat bars to be less superior to just about any other Kit Kat bar.

Is Boring Candy Interesting?

These Nibs made me think a little bit about what makes a candy interesting. Bright colours, interesting shapes, fun textures? In some ways these Nibs get a check in each category, yet I wouldn't call them interesting at all. I might even go so far as to call these the opposite of interesting, but I wouldn't call them boring. It's as if these Nibs somehow manage to be so simple and dull that I'm totally fascinated about who would come up with this idea, how one could market these, and why they've been on the market for so long. I ate an entire giant bag of these Nibs trying to figure this out, and I had a really good time.

I Don't Think I Like Menthol

Fairly often I find that I've discovered a new candy or kind of candy that I love, rarely do I find one that I don't like. While I don't hate all menthol candies, I'm finding that recently more and more candies using this cool ingredient seem to be using it wrong. It has got to a point where if I find a candy that has the word "cool" or "menthol" on it and it's not mint, then I'm a little nervous about trying it. I understand what Hershey's is doing here with the menthol flavour, but I just don't think it works. It's almost as if they saw the design of this bar on paper, then didn't bother to actually taste it when it was done.

Everything Is Not Clear

I think we all have mixed feelings about surprises. A surprise is great when it's something you enjoy, but it's horrible when it's something you don't. This is often the case with candies, as they are probably the food where surprises are the most common. After all, the idea of getting a hamburger and finding a "surprise" is something that scares most people. A gumball filled with something surprising sounds a lot better, but only if it's something you like. If I got a gumball filled with fake watermelon flavoured goo I'd be really disappointed and might even spit it out. If this gumball was filled with cherry goo I'd be super happy. These Malo Cups had a surprise, and I wasn't really that happy about it.
