Time To Geek Out... Or Nerd Out.

It's not often that I write a review that has almost nothing to do with the candy and everything to do with the package. When this does happen it goes one of two directions, either the package is so amazing that I can't help but talk about it, or it's such a disappointment that it actually lowers the quality of the candy. Let me just say that I wasn't impressed with the way this candy was presented.

Check out my full review to find out why this candy idea fell flat.

Grape Is The Best?

Whenever I'm given a selection of candies to review, the one question that always makes it difficult is which flavour to choose from. The soda themed caramel corn from this week's review is a great example. There were at least 4 or 5 different flavours to choose from, and I had to make that choice in a busy supermarket with a lot of other groceries on my mind. I don't have a favourite flavour when it comes to sodas or at least one that I know I'll always pick. In cases like this I just go with instinct. I feel like the thought process in this case was that I don't seem to remember trying too many other candies that are themed to grape soda. There are plenty of grape flavoured treats, but not so many that are grape soda flavoured. In hindsight maybe it would have been better to go with a more classic soda flavour, like root beer or cola. Having said that, I don't regret trying this caramel corn and maybe it will encourage me to get the other flavours too.

Find out why this grape soda themed caramel corn grabbed my interest with my latest review.

Time For A Loving Review

Every year I go out to the local stores and try and find a candy to review on Valentine's Day, and just about every year I find one. Then I go out and try and think of something to get Allison for Valentine's Day, and it's never in the isle where I find the candy I reviewed. Maybe it's just us, but we never buy "Valentine's" themed things for each other. If we do get something for the other person it tends to be something they really like, not something that's themed towards the holiday. Don't get me wrong, if you like Valentine's Day things then that special someone should get a Valentine's Day treat for you. I just can't imagine that so many people in this world actually like Valentine's Day stuff so much. Having said that, every year stores fill up with the stuff so people must be buying it.

Company Crossovers

I'm always skeptical when two different snacking companies cross over. While I'm always skeptical, I almost always give these crossovers a try. Jelly Belly however is a company that almost always seems to do fairly well with company crossovers. While I may not love each and every strange crossover Jelly Belly does, I always feel like they manage to keep the spirit alive. Jelly Belly has a knack for creating flavours that may seem weird on paper, but for some reason they get the flavour pretty close or sometimes exactly. This week I tried a Jelly Belly that tasted a lot like a doughnut, unfortunately it didn't taste like my favourite donut of all times.

It's Not Chirstmas, It's National Hot Chocolate Day

I was really debating about making this new review a Christmas review, then I remembered that National Hot Chocolate Day was coming and it seemed the perfect fit. I used to celebrate many of the "national" days that were associated with candy and junk food, but frankly it was just too much. Now I celebrate if I feel like I can. I also feel like as long as it's cold outside and I have the means, any day can be Hot Chocolate Day.

Is It Lazy To Be Mysterious?

One of the trends in candy that almost always frustrates me is the idea of a mystery flavour. While I'm sure there are many marketing reasons that candy companies use this trend, my brain keeps telling me that they're only being lazy. I feel like someone created a weird flavour that no one at the company could figure out. Rather then think creatively and decide on a flavour, I feel like these candy companies just label the candy as a "mystery" flavour. In some cases they label it as a mystery and then let other people guess what flavour it is. Then I imagine that they pick the most popular choice of what people thought it tasted like and just call it by that flavour from then on. I don't know for sure that this has ever been the case, but it's what I imagine.

Check out our latest mysterious candy review right now.

Subtle Flavours Should Be Cherished

So as you may or may not know, there is a possibility that I have Covid right now (I don't know for sure as in Canada the only people that can be tested are vulnerable people and those working with vulnerable people). At this point my symptoms are mild and in general I'm still able to do almost everything I did before, except go outside. Today's candy review did remind me that some people lose their sense of taste. This makes me a little nervous because treats like these marshmallows require not only a basic sense of taste, but the ability to taste subtle flavours. I have set up a few fail safes if I was to ever get sick or lose my sense of taste (temporarily). I actually have many candy reviews done in advance that I can post at any time. While we live in crazy times, I always want to make sure you can read a new candy review each week.

Is Peanut Butter Overused?

This week's new candy review is of the Snickers "Creamy Peanut Butter". As far as I know there has already been another Snickers with peanut butter, and in fact I would argue that just about every single major candy company has produced at least one version of their treat with peanut butter. While I do enjoy peanut butter with chocolate, I feel like this ingredient is overused. More to the point, I feel like every candy companies figures that peanut butter will always work. This may be true, but judging by this review I think it's not. Peanut butter has a particular flavour and texture and it doesn't always work with everything, and even when it does "work" it has to be used properly. Peanut butter is not just an ingredient you can slap onto every single candy bar and guarantee a winner.

Find out why this week's featured candy doesn't work, even though it has peanut butter.

In The Middle Of Winter

I always feel like there's a bit of a drought of candies or snacks dedicated to winter. Sure there are plenty of Christmas treats that you could technically say are themed to winter, but for some reason all of these winter themed treats seem to disappear right after the new year. I want to see snack and candy companies come up with treats dedicated to the month of January that aren't Valentine's Day themed. I want winter treats exclusive for winter that are not only available after the holiday season, but maybe even exclusive to after the holiday season. This week's review is the closest I could find, they're winter, but they're definitely not Christmas.

Put Some Fruit On Those Pebbles

If you think about the name "Fruity Pebbles" it's a really odd concept for a cereal. I also think it might be the only regularly updated version of Fred Flintsone in cartoons. It's weird that it appears that a cereal themed to a cartoon character might live longer than the cartoon itself. It's particularly strange because it's not like the Flintsones wasn't a popular cartoon show. At its time it was the most popular cartoon for adults, ever. In some ways it was the precursor to the Simpsons. But now we're here, where there are kids buying a candy bar themed to a cereal, for a popular cartoon series they may have never seen.

Jelly Beans And Christmas

One thing I love about the candy industry lately is how each and every company is adjusting for each and every holiday. While I don't associate Christmas with jelly beans, Jelly Belly has managed to make the connection. Jelly Belly has the advantage in that they can pretty much make any flavour they like for just about any holiday. I do however have a great deal of fun walking the candy aisles of grocery stories right now looking at how candy companies are trying to blend in with the holidays.

A Weird Christmas Review

Many of you out there would probably argue that this Reese's Peanut Butter Cup has nothing to do with Christmas at all, and I'd agree. I don't see how the addition of peanut brittle makes a peanut butter cup holiday themed. The thing is, I found it at a Target in the Christmas section, in a Christmas display, and it has all kinds of green decorations all around it. Everything points to the idea that this peanut brittle peanut butter cup was meant to be sold at Christmas, except for the fact that as far as I know peanut brittle has no connection to Christmas at all.

The Christmas Extravaganza Continues With Santa

Here's a completely random thing that happens to me often because of this site. I often find that I have to misspell certain words. In the most recent case it has to do with this new Christmas chocolate review. The chocolates are in the form of Santa Clause. So in this bag there are several Santas, which all my spell checks consistently remind me is not a word. It makes sense that a pluralized version of a proper name cannot be a word, but when you're such a famous person and your image might be on many different things then that changes. I know that my spelling is not the best, but I try, the fact that the word Santas keeps coming up wrong for me on my spellcheck is driving me nuts.

Starting The Christmas Reviews

Christmas decorations and treats started coming out really early this year. I noticed many Christmas things on store shelves well before Halloween was even over. At first it bugged me, but then I learned that stores had a hard time ordering things this year because of Covid shortages and disruptions. I also changed my tune and remembered last year how great it was when people kept their Christmas decorations up a little longer than usual. I quickly changed from the Christmas Grinch to... well whoever the opposite of the Christmas Grinch might be. So this year I've gone a little nuts with Christmas treats to review, and because of that, I've decided to start posting my reviews now. Simple Bars Can Be Original

I feel like the candy industry is obsessed with making super crazy fancy bars. I feel like this is their attempt to make original candy, but they do it by using too many ingredients or by using ingredients that are weird for the sake of being weird. I argue that you can use only a few ingredients, each of which being something you commonly find matched with each other, and still create an original bar. Candy Crossover Success

I feel like the candy crossover is something that's often tried, but doesn't always succeed. In order for a candy crossover to work it has to do one (or both) of two things. It either has to be well thought out and blend together so well that you don't really know where each treat ends or begins. The other option is to be so weird that you end up with a novelty candy that people may not actually enjoy eating, but they're curious enough to give it a try. This Jelly Belly gum falls squarely into the first, in fact I'm kind of surprised that no one has made Jelly Belly gum before.
